Appendicitis: How to Tell It's Not Just Gas Pain

Uday Ravi Writer & Ecosystem Contributor

Abdominal pain is often blamed on gas or indigestion. However, pain that worsens or moves to the lower-right abdomen could be a warning sign of appendicitis. Recognizing the symptoms early is important because untreated appendicitis can lead to serious complications.

What Is Appendicitis? β†—

Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix, a small pouch attached to the large intestine. It can develop suddenly and requires prompt medical assessment.

Appendicitis vs Gas Pain: What Should You Watch For?

1. Pain that changes location

Appendicitis pain often begins around the belly button and moves to the lower-right abdomen over several hours.

2. Pain that keeps getting worse

Unlike temporary digestive discomfort, appendicitis pain commonly becomes more persistent and intense. Walking, coughing or other movement may aggravate it.

3. Nausea or vomiting

Loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting can accompany appendicitis. Fever may also develop.

4. Persistent abdominal discomfort

Gas commonly causes bloating, cramps, burping or passing gas. However, these symptoms do not reliably rule out appendicitis. Some people with appendicitis also experience bloating or difficulty passing gas.

When Should You Seek Medical Attention?

Seek urgent medical assessment if abdominal pain progressively worsens, moves to the lower-right abdomen or occurs with nausea, vomiting or fever. Severe abdominal pain requires emergency care.

Do not wait for the pain to become unbearable. Appendicitis can cause complications if treatment is delayed. A doctor may assess your symptoms, examine your abdomen and recommend blood tests, urine tests or imaging.

Can Appendicitis Be Treated?

Treatment depends on the diagnosis and severity. Surgery to remove the appendix, called an appendectomy, is a common treatment. Selected cases may be managed with antibiotics under medical supervision.
