The Sapienza University of Rome is a collegiate research institute located in Rome, Italy. Formerly referred to as "La Sapienza", it is considered one of the largest European universities by enrollment. Since it was founded in 1303, it is considered one of the oldest in history. The mission of the University is to play an important role in the development of society through excellence, quality education, research, and international collaboration. It is ranked among the top Italian universities by many of the world's leading universities based on its academic achievement and international dimension. In 2018, it ranked No. 1 in Classics and Ancient History worldwide.
Sapienza University has several campuses in Rome, and its main campus is called University City. It is spread over an area of about 110 acres and is located near Roma Tiburtina station. Also, the institution has satellite campuses located outside Rome, the main one in Latin. All the campuses of the University are well equipped with facilities required for a learning environment. From 65 departments to 11 faculties, 55 libraries, and 18 museums, they have everything to help students learn better. In addition, it has a wide variety of sports, music, and cultural activities that ensure the holistic development of the students.
The university has about 112,000 students, 4000 faculty, 2000 staff, librarians and technicians, and 2000 administrative staff in university hospitals. About 30,000 students from different cities of Italy come to join the university. Out of this number, more than 8000 foreigners and about 3300 students visit the institute every year through international mobility programs. Currently, it offers about 270-degree programs that offer undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees to students. Various research programs are offered by Sapienza University in the fields of natural sciences, humanities, biomedical sciences, and engineering. Many international opportunities are also offered to students by the university. Some of these include scholarships abroad, dual degrees, international PhDs, and internships in European and non-European countries.
Sapienza's notable alumni network includes many distinguished personalities, including Presidents of the European Parliament, heads of state, Nobel Laureates, European Commissioners, well-known religious figures, astronauts, and scientists. A few names include mathematician Benedetto Castelli, biologist Paola S. Among them were Timiras, archaeologist Anna Maria Picci, and philosopher Giuseppe Ungaretti.
