The Sacred Heart Church


The Sacred Heart Church is located on Main Street in Yarmouth. Originally, the parish was served by five different priests over a seven-year period. In April 1910, the Bishop named Reverend Joseph D. Quinn as the new pastor. Father Quinn served in this role for more than 27 years. During this time, Father Quinn purchased the property and converted it into a new rectory. A barn was converted into a church in 1911. This was the first Mass celebrated in the Sacred Head parish. The tetrastyle building burned down in 1913, destroying the entire church and its altar.

The Sacred Heart Church was built in the 1700s. After the fire, the interior of the church was restored to reflect Father Quinn's original plans. A magnificent rose window was installed in the sanctuary, and the church's interior was renovated. After the hurricane in Katrina, Reverend Chabot began his pastorate in 1984. During his tenure, he oversaw the creation of a new music ministry, the adoption of a sister parish in Haiti, and the installation of an oak-encased pipe organ.

Throughout the centuries, the Sacred Heart has served as a community for mill workers. In the 1800s, the Sacred hearts of the community were used for missions in Lisbon and Portland. During the last century, the church became a mission for Lisbon. Its founder, Reverend James A. Flynnn, had been appointed as the first priest to the Sacred Heart parish and bought a house in the neighborhood.

Sacred Heart Church is an active parish with many members. Its mission has been successful in growing as a community for over 100 years. In the year 1900, the Catholic community reached its peak and grew rapidly, making a permanent home for the church necessary. In 1916, Freeport became a mission church with the Sacred Heel Parish. In the same year, the Freeport parish established the Sacred Martyrs' parish.
