The Sacred Heart Church in Manhattan and the Bronx


The Sacred Heart Church is a Catholic parish in Manhattan and the Bronx. It was founded in 1876. The church began as Plymouth Baptist Church, which was located at 487 West 51st Street. Then inLearn More , the Sacred-Heart Parish was built on the site. The original pastor was Father Raymond Dalla Porta, who was appointed by Cardinal O'Connell. The congregation was founded on this site, and later grew to include many other congregations.

The Sacred Heart Parish was organized in June 1875 and served the territory formerly part of St. Augustine's parish. Father Mullen secured a hall at 165th Street and Lind Avenue, where he celebrated the first Mass. In addition, he purchased a wooden frame chapel from the parish of St. Rose of Lima in Lower Manhattan, which he transported in sections to the site. Once there, he built a church on the site.

Volunteers are needed to help decorate the church. Sign ups for this project are open on Wednesday, December 15, at 11am. During the month of December, the Sacred Heart parish is having an appreciation dinner for the volunteers. The dinner will be served on Saturday, December 20. There will be a chicken dinner and a white elephant gift exchange. Additionally, the Sacred-Heart Parish has hired Rev. Eustace Faucher, who has been assigned as the parish's first resident priest.

The Sacred-Heart Parish was organized on June 18, 1875, and served the territory previously served by St. Augustine's parish. The Parish's first Mass was held at the hall on June 20, 1875. The new building is expected to contain 96 units and is located between a school and a residential complex.

The Sacred Heart Churchhas several ministries in West Marin. The parish's office is open Monday-Friday from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM and from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM. During the summer, the parish will be open on Fridays from 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM, with Sunday services being held at 9:30am and 2:00 PM. After Easter, the Sacred-Heart Church hosts an appreciation dinner on December 20. The dinner is provided by the parish. Guests are encouraged to bring a white elephant gift. The school will also move back to Sacred-Heart on April 2, 2022.

The church office is open on Monday and Friday from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM. During the summer, the office will be open every Friday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The school will close for lunch from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM. During the winter, the church is closed for a forty-hour devotion. It will return to the Sacred Heart on April 2, 2022.

The Sacred Heart Church has two major functions and is in need of assistance. The parish offers daily Masses in Spanish and English. It also has a school that is active, a faith formation center for children, and a rental center for special events. The Sacred-Heart is one of the oldest Catholic parishes in West Marin. The YMCA bought a plot next to the Bowery in 1910.

During the summer, the church office will be open from 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM. The parish is currently closed on Fridays, but the office will be open on Saturdays.
