If you're looking for a new ute, then the new BT-50 Thunder is an excellent choice. Or perhaps you've already made up your mind and you're already searching Adelaide's car dealerships for a Mazda BT50 for sale. Either way, read on for an in-depth look at the new Thunder and decide for yourself!
The new Thunder shakes up the already powerful BT-50 range. Previously, it was the GT variant that was the top-of-the-line model, but now it's the Thunder that rules the roost thanks to a raft of new practical and cosmetic upgrades. There's a choice of automatic or manual transmissions as part of the reliable Isuzu-made powertrain which also brings a bit of Isuzu's famous brawn to the table.
Coupled with Mazda's great eye for design, it makes for a tough-looking ute that's still got a premium feel to it.
The Thunder is powered by an intercooled 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel that makes 140kW at 3,600rpm and 450Nm of torque at 1,600-2,600 rpm. There's a choice of either a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed sport automatic to pair it with, with the automatic version costing slightly more.
For your off-road needs, the Thunder comes with a lockable rear diff and selectable 4WD with a selectable high or low range as needed through the real transfer case.
The interior of the Thunder is where it really starts to feel premium. In fact, it's easily one of the best-furnished cabins in the segment with comfortable leather bucket seats and trimmings that feel like they should be from an SUV instead of a ute and makes a nice contrast to the aggressive exterior design. There's also plenty of space in the back, where the seats emulate the bucket design of those in the front and easily fit adults.
In terms of technology, both front seats are heated, and the driver can enjoy an eight-way powered seat adjustment system on their side. There are also heated, power-folding wing mirrors, keyless entry, remote start functionality and dual-zone climate control.
The Thunder is easily one of the safest utes in its class. It gained a five-star safety rating from ANCAP for its performance in crash testing. The automatic transmission variants get lane-keeping assists and radar cruise control, while a raft of other features come as standard, including blind-spot alerts, traffic sign recognition, electronic stability and trailer sway control, amongst others.
If you like the look of the BT-50, you might be wondering whether it's better to buy new or used. The truth is there are benefits and drawbacks either way. New vehicles can have higher insurance costs, but you'll be saving money on tires and repairs. Used vehicles depreciate in value slower but might be less reliable. In the end, the route you choose will depend on your personal preference and your personal finances.
The Mazda BT50 Thunder is an excellent all-around ute that has more than a few premium touches. It's well worth a buy!
