You can now Contribute to Making AI Better With 'Minecraft'

Minecraft has a ton of useful applications, a lot of which teach players. It can also be used to aid in making the very computers that we play on more intelligent, too. That's what Microsoft's Project Malmo was formerly known as DNA Storage Project, is doing right now. It was announced today on the official blog of Mojang, Project Malmo has just released its open source tools accessible to everyone in an effort to help others in advancing AI in various ways.

Mojang notes that Minecraft is the ideal method of teaching AI in offering solutions to problems, sharpening spatial and temporal reasoning, and even collaboration. Project Malmo can provide a variety of opportunities to teach artificial intelligence software and act as a research tool that can test these theories too.

If you're interested to see what Project Malmo has to offer in addition to testing it out for yourself it is possible to download the mod for the PC/Mac version of Minecraft here. The ability to code is essential but don't let that scare you away, because as Microsoft attests even novices should be able to jump in, and they're excited to see what people come up with.
