Lego already sells Minecraft playsets that let gamers build their own virtual worlds. And Lego Worlds will invite fans to play the same game in reverse.

Tom Stone, TT Games director of management, said that Lego Worlds "embodies the physical, Lego brick building fun that consumers have enjoyed over the years, and is now available on a new digital platform that delivers an entirely new experience that includes the beloved bricks."

He said, "From the brick-bybrick editor to a wide selection of items, characters and creatures to populate you worlds - there are endless possibilities for creativity."

Your favorite toy

Daniel Goldberg, who wrote a book on the growth of Minecraft said that he was "surprised" that it took so long.

"Minecraft is exactly what Lego could have done 10 years ago," he said.

"I'm certain that it will be a huge hit for them."

Markus Persson, the Swedish video games developer who came up with Minecraft, has never hidden his enthusiasm for Lego, and the admiration seems to be reciprocal.

David Gram, Lego's Marketing Director, has stated in the past year that "Minecraft was digital Lego." It's a fantastic idea however, we would have liked to had thought of it earlier.

Mr. Goldberg thinks Mr Persson also who is also known as Notch He will be "flattered" by the game.

"Lego was his favorite toy as a child and was the main motivation behind Minecraft, so it is great to see things come full circle," he said.

"I do not believe there will be animosity. Games developers in general tend to be flattered when someone copies their game."

Lego is not just intended for children, but also adult collectors.

Minecraft was purchased by Microsoft in the last year it has also been able to attract both adults and children.

"The audience for Minecraft has proven itself to be huge and I'm sure there will be a place for both games," said Mr Goldberg.
