Epic Games 'definitely Won't' Follow Minecraft NFT Ban

Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney says his firm "definitely won't" follow Minecraft developers in banning non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

As previously reported, Minecraft developers Mojang Studios has banned NFT integrations on Wednesday since it believes the speculative aspect of NFTs as well as the risk of exclusion and scams supposedly associated with NFTs being incompatible with the game's fundamentals.

The move was seen as highly controversial within the NFT community, but it has been greeted with praise by the community of crypto-skeptic gamers.

The company of Sweeney is the creators of the highly successful battle royal game Fortnite and is considered to be a Metaverse-based platform. While Epic Games isnt necessarily pro-crypto and NFTs, its CEO stated that the company doesn't intend to force any views regarding the subject on its players.

Developers should be able to design their games and you can decide whether or not you want to play them. I believe that stores and operating system makers shouldn't be interfering in any way by imposing their ideas on others. We won't.

In response to the post, Twitter user Low5ive asked Sweeney if Epic Games' policy on prohibiting "hateful/discriminatory content" differs from this. In response, Sweeney suggested that Epic Games does make "editorial" judgments, but NFTs do not currently fall under the umbrella of.

He stated that a store cannot make any such decisions and would only play any game that is legal and draw the line at accepted norms like we do, or allow games that are in line with the owner's personal opinions.

The NFT ban by Mojang Studios has left one particular project dubbed NFT Worlds with a huge problem to solve, given that it was built on one of Minecraft's open source servers.

The community-driven play-to earn (P2E) platform has an entire crypto and NFT ecosystem built around it and its NFTs producing 51,000 Ether (ETH), or $80.8 million worth of trading volume at the time of writing. Since the news broke however, the floor price of its NFTs has fallen from 3.33 ETH to 1.01 ETH as of the moment of writing, while its native token WRLD has dropped by 55% within the same time frame.

After the Mojang announcement, the NFT Worlds team stated it is now "brainstorming solutions" on how to proceed. The team also said that it is working to connect with Minecraft to see if a possible solution is possible. In the meantime, a switch to an "Minecraft-like game engine" or GameFi platform has been outlined as possible possibilities.
