A British man hopes to have broken the record of the world for the longest continuous game of Minecraft.

Joe Kelly from Cheltenham played the game for 35 hours 35 minutes and 35 seconds and raised PS1,800 for cancer research.

Martin Fornleitner, Austria, set the current record of 24 hours and 10 minutes in 2011.

Minecraft is about creating structures from blocks, exploring worlds , and fighting in battles.

The title has been sold in excess of 54 million copies across the world.

Microsoft bought Mojang, the studio behind it for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn) last year.

Mr. Kelly who owns a film company and is a voice actor, has been playing the game since it came out in the year 2010. He typically plays for just a few hours each week.

He told BBC that he could stay awake without caffeine and it wasn't too difficult.

"There there were no stimulants other than for sugar and stubbornness."

Mr Kelly who streamed the entire game via YouTube, added that the incident took its toll on his hands.

"My shoulders didn't hurt, my back didn't ache - the worst thing was my fingers.

"They suffer so much from holding keyboard and mouse and clenching them for such a long time.

"Every little break I got I was moving my fingers."

Mr. Kelly and his girlfriend, Sarah Vallance, are currently working on providing evidence of the feat to Guinness World Records.

He is not planning to rest from the game.

"I introduced my girlfriend to Minecraft, we usually play together," he said.

" It's something we like to do together. I'm not afraid to play."
