How to Setup Yahoo Mail in Outlook Using IMAP Settings

Yahoo may not be the most popular email application but it still has millions of users across the globe. If you wish to use your Yahoo email account with an email program using IMAP then you are at the correct place.

IMAP permits you to use any email including Outlook, Mozilla, Thunderbird, and Gmail. This also allows you to send and receive Yahoo mail. This guide will give you step-by-step instructions on how to use IMAP and change your yahoo mail settings.

What are IMAP, SMTP, and POP?

The Internet Mail Access Protocol (IMAP) controls the viewing of messages and the receipts of the email. Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) helps in sending messages. If you want to set up Yahoo mail in Outlook then, these protocols will help you a lot.  Post Office Protocol (POP) is also supported in Yahoo mail. This governs the receipts of messages in the Yahoo mail.

Yahoo Mail IMAP Setup

If you wish to use Yahoo in an email program then you need to change Yahoo mail outlook settings. You will find these settings in the program’s new account section.

  • Yahoo mail IMAP server: imap.mail.yahoo.com

  • IMAP port: 993

  • IMAP TLS/SSL: yes

  • IMAP username: Your Yahoo mail address

  • IMAP Password: The password you have used in your Yahoo mail or the app password

  • Yahoo mail SMTP server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com

  • SMTP Port: 465 (use 587 if this doesn’t work)

  • SMTP TLS/SSL: Yes

  • SMTP username: The Yahoo mail address of your account

  • SMTP password: The account password of your Yahoo mail

Note: We recommend that if you wish to use an email program using IMAP and SMTP. Refrain from using POP because by default this deletes the email form server once downloaded on the other end. This means that you can only access these emails on the device they were downloaded.
