This anthology celebrates the diversity of public art and includes not only those sculptures created by artists, but other more utilitarian structures, such as drinking fountains, horse troughs and coal plates. Lucy and David Abel Smith, art collectors, set up the first Fresh Air Sculpture in 1992 at the Quenington Old Rectory Gardens. The show's originality, innovative mix of traditional, modern, and cutting-edge outdoor sculpture has received a lot of praise year after year. Fresh Air Sculpture is now a well-known and highly anticipated fixture in the art events calendar. Fresh Air Sculpture became a charitable trust, under Quenington Sculpture Trust, in 1997. The SSRU encourages transdisciplinary creativity and vision in order to shape a humane, ecologically sustainable society. It engages with Joseph Beuys' thinking and work, its influences and new developments, and insights from different cultural and disciplinary contexts.


Alumni have worked with galleries including Stephen Friedman Gallery, White Cube and the Royal Festival Hall, as well as, for artists such as Cerith Wyn Evans, Angus Fairhirst and Anthony Gormley. It is magical to walk from St Ives' fishing village through the secret sculpture garden and studio of Barbara Hepworth. Hepworth's friend, composer Priaulx Rainier, designed the garden and Hepworth herself sited many of the bronzes. The National Trust's remarkable assemblage of sculptures by and after Rysbrack is arguably the most significant anywhere. The greatest concentration of works is at Stourhead where there are monumental statues after the antique, portrait busts and terracotta reliefs.

Studio based learning is by one-to-one or group tutorial, small group discussion and cross level peer group. There are visiting lectures most weeks who do a talk about their own work and offer you tutorials. You will build on the discoveries made in year one by continuing to experiment with a material-based and experimental approach to making art. This will allow you to drive your ideas and create a clear territory for your studio practice. You will build the skills developed in the workshop modules and/or other approaches developed by you individually such as installation, photography, video, sound and performance.
