The ELDs have been mandated to be used for all commercial trucks, and rightly so, having an electronic logging device ensures a safe work environment for one and all. The biggest benefit of having an ELD at your disposal is that it ensures highway safety for everyone. ELDs ensure drivers are able to strike a good balance between work and rest, thereby helping prevent any untoward incident(s). As you know, driver fatigue is one of the biggest reasons of accidents on the highway that unfortunately end in fatality. ELDs can help easily deal with it.
If you are still in two minds about whether to go ahead with installing an ELD device, take a closer look at some of its benefits that can help take your trucking business/company to its peak:
Truck and Driver Safety: It is advised by the FMCSA for a long-haul driver to drive for just 11 hours out of his 14 hours work duty. However, this is not always followed. They keep driving without keeping track (or without taking the necessary break in the middle). Ultimately fatigue sets in- the root of most issues.
This is where the ELDs’ HOS feature can prove to be extremely useful. This will help ensure drivers are not violating the Hours of Service rules- they exactly know the number of hours they’ve driven and number of hours left before their duty is over, while on the part of the owner- they’ll always have accurate data handy and peace of mind knowing their vehicle is in compliance.
It is a win-win for everyone.
Reduced Liabilities: Time and again, there’ve been cases where bringing someone to justice who’s at fault post an accident have been difficult due to lack of sufficient evidence to prove the person is guilty. This is easily taken care of with an ELD in place from where accurate data can be extracted on the lines of speed limit, whether someone was exercising proper driving behavior, etc. that eventually led to the crash. This is directly proportional to reduced liabilities by virtue of lower number of lawsuits to be faced by a truck owner/company.
Cut Down on Insurance Premiums: You’ll have an edge over your competitors in the eyes of insurance providers if you are using ELDs. Insurance companies always prefer those using ELDs over fleet companies that don’t use it. This translates into lower insurance premiums. According to them, using an ELD is basically a show of someone’s responsibility towards being safe. Of course, such efforts will always stand someone in good stead.
Increase your Return on Investment: Using ELDs will mean higher return on investment through more savings from lower risk of accidents, reduced insurance rates and lower vehicle repair costs (ELDs will notify any vehicle issue prior to a breakdown). You are able to nip the problem in the bud in terms of being able to avert a crisis or resolve it while the problem is still manageable.
It’s high time you put your hands on this effective truck management solution i.e. the ELD, which is one of the best ways to boost CSA scores, thereby allowing a truck company to maintain an impeccable reputation in the industry.
