Boy, 7 Years Old, Spends PS1,200 Online through Apple Games



A mother-of-two has accused Apple of 'enabling' children to spend money online after her son, who is seven, racked up a four figure bill for games.



Abi Smith received a series of emails from Harry, confirming that Harry had made more 60 in-app purchases and totalled PS1,218 with her permission.



She had set up an iPad password on Harry's however, the schoolboy managed to replace it with his thumbprint. Then, he spent some PS792 on virtual cat food among other purchases.



The woman, 40 years old hails from Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, had to borrow money to pay the bills. She has now taken to the streets of Apple for initially refusing her refund.

Harry bought eight bags of virtual cat food costing PS99 each on The Battle Cats game, and also made a number of purchases on Minecraft for PS48.99 each and six on the cult game Among Us and smaller purchases of PS1.99.



Apple has since confirmed it will refund Ms. Smith the money.



Ms. Smith is a Pennsylvanian on furlough is now urging Apple to provide an additional layer of security.



She said: 'These games are addictive and continuously encouraging children to spend more money. Apple are enabling that platform for children to spend money.



"Harry did something that was as innocent as a child would. He didn't want his little brother going on his tablet, so he put a thumbprint on to make sure he wouldn't be able to access.

'Normally , he'd call me and ask'mummy, can I download this and I'd answer yes or no.



"It has not happened to me before and I can assure you that it won't happen again." Security features are in place but for me, it's not enough. A simple thing like a CVC is an extra measure.



'I'm furloughed. I've already seen a decrease in my monthly payment but the next day, it was completely clean. I had to borrow money to pay off my bills.

She described the games as "dangerous" for encouraging constant purchase of in-app items, after Harry went from spending 99p to racking up a four-figure sum.



Harry offered to pay his mother back with money from his pocket.



She said: 'The sole purchase I'd made on the account was for 99p and I was absolutely unaware until they told me that your card's details automatically save.



"There should be a choice, and if there were I'd say no. That completely avoids this happening to children. This is the goal I'm trying to achieve with Apple.



"I had security settings in place, but unfortunately, I've got a very smart boy who managed to leave his thumbprint there.



Ms Smith claims that her bank refused to stop payments due to them being classified as authorized. Ms Smith then applied to each purchase to be individually reimbursed online, but Apple twice refused to refund her.

Apple declined to comment, but it did mention its 'Ask to Buy' feature that sends a request to a family member whenever an infant attempts to purchase something.



The parent, or account owner, can then either approve or decline the request to prevent issues like the one that Ms Smith had.
