The highest level in the Italian quality pyramid, the DOCG, protects the Brunello di Montalcino wine style. Only within the boundaries of the Municipality of Montalcino in the Province of Siena in southeast Tuscany is this wine permitted to be made. The vineyard region, which is 243.62 square kilometers in size, is traversed by the Ombrone, Asso, and Orcia Rivers.
