Technology Trends to Watch: The Transformation of the Construction Industry through Digitalisation
[a]https%3A%2F%2Fwww.glodon.com%2Fen%2Flandingpage%2FGsite2.0[/a]

#Glodon #Company #Limited

Data and digital technologies have revolutionised many industries, and the construction industry is no exception. These technologies have revolutionised how we design, build, and operate buildings. In order to implement digitalisation successfully in construction projects, all stakeholders must be considered and the benefits of digital tools must be leveraged for sustainable growth.

"Digitalisation is revolutionising the construction industry, and to stay ahead, stakeholders must embrace cutting-edge trends like Digital Twins, integrated platforms, modular construction, and IoT devices. It's time to transform how we design, build, and operate buildings for a sustainable future." said Cristina Savian.

There are several trends to watch for long-term success as industry goals and technology keep evolving.

Moving Beyond BIM to Digital Twins

As one of the most widely used digital tools in the construction industry, Building Information Modelling (BIM) allows construction teams to create digital models of buildings that can be used to visualise and plan construction projects. As powerful as BIM is for planning and designing buildings, Digital Twins take this concept to the next level by creating a virtual replica of the building that can be used for monitoring, analysing, and optimising its performance. Digital Twins can be used to predict and prevent potential problems before they occur, which is one of their major advantages. As a result, building owners and operators can optimise performance, reduce costs, and improve user experiences. We can expect to see even more innovative applications of Digital Twins in the construction industry as more data becomes available and analytical tools become more sophisticated.
Bringing Digital Twin Expertise to Australia, Glodon Presents at Digital Built World Summit
[a]https%3A%2F%2Fwww.glodon.com%2Fen%2Flandingpage%2FGsite2.0[/a]

#Glodon

From 22-23, February 2023, over 300 global AEC executives and industry experts from around the world gathered in Sydney and virtually at the Digital Built World Summit 2023 to share their experiences and predictions on how to leverage digital technology to design, build, and operate smart, responsive, and sustainable assets. Glodon, as a leading digital building platform service provider, is proud to be part of the effort to transform the construction industry with technology.

Being organised with FuturePlace, the summit is Asia-Pacific's premier event on improving digital business outcomes, including strategic innovation, connected assets, sustainable construction, user experience, and optimisation of capital planning for large assets.

"The world deserves better," Cristina Savian, CEO and Founder of BE-WISE, said in the opening remark. "As our world changes rapidly, so does our built environment. We must strive to build smarter, safer, and more sustainable built environments to meet the needs of our growing population while minimising our environmental impact."

This echoes Glodon's mission to apply technology to improve the living and working environment. The summit provides a good chance for the company to demonstrate how its Digital Building Platform service could facilitate digitalisation in the construction industry.

Digital building refers to an industrial strategy that uses BIM, cloud computing, big data, IoT, AI, and other information technologies to lead the industrial transformation with advanced lean construction methods.

It brings new changes to the building industry where: the transformation of production method will drive the construction process from physical to digital twin construction, followed by new changes in management and transaction mode as well as the transformation of the business model towards the development of large-scale customisation and service-oriented construction.

This year's summit focuses on digital twins — a hot topic in the construction industry, with an increasing number of companies recognising its immense potential to transform how buildings are designed, built, and operated.

As put by the organiser, "digital twins are no longer a futuristic tool but are fast gaining traction globally as a way to increase collaboration and efficiency when designing & building – improve the performance visibility and operation of buildings and infrastructure assets – connect and managing cities and to drive sustainability outcomes."

Based on the company's experience, Pierpaolo Franco, Vice President of International Markets Development at Glodon, examined digital twins' current state and future potential across the asset lifecycle, how digital twins will influence the industry in the future, and what their untapped potential in his speech.

The Digital Building Platform is a core engine and new infrastructure that builds a digital base for the industry and establishes an operation logic that maps the virtual and physical world, creating a new form of the industrial digital twin to promote the transformation, he said.

Digital innovators across the sectors are beginning to research the value of digital twins for specific outcomes. Pilot projects are being set up to demonstrate an ROI before expanding the technology.

Sebastian Tang, International Research and Intelligence Director at Glodon, together with other panellists, discussed how to ensure the twinning investment has value and how to prepare for a digital twin program that supports the ROI of the strategy.

A key point agreed by the panellists was that the digital twin journey has to start with a clear vision or expectation of specific outcomes. Digital twins should be an approach to achieving certain business goals rather than adopting them for the sake of doing it.

Interview: Digitalisation in Construction Industry Facilitates Data-driven Decisions to Reduce Environmental Impact
[a]https%3A%2F%2Fwww.glodon.com%2Fen%2Fsolutions%2FDigital-Construction-Solution-1[/a]

#Glodon

"The rise of the digital economy offers an opportunity to bring business transformation in the construction sector and promote a new way of doing things, effectively enabling transformative change in the construction system as a whole," said Dr. Shu Tang, assistant professor at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU)'s Department of Civil Engineering, during a recent interview with Glodon.

Dr. Tang is in charge of research on low-carbon operation strategies in the green building industry based on big data under an MoU signed between Glodon and XJTLU. She added that the construction industry's inevitable progression trend includes green concepts and intelligent means.

What follows are highlights of Dr. Tang's answer to the interview, edited and condensed for clarity.

Green Building and the Impact of Digitalisation on the Environment

The construction industry is known as a significant contributor to carbon dioxide emissions because it consumes a sizable amount of global energy. The construction industry consumes more than 40% of the world's energy and emits one-third of all greenhouse gases, other environmental impacts of the building industry are wide. Green building has gained substantial support as a panacea for minimising the environmental impacts of buildings to achieve sustainable development.

The primary benefits of green building are known to include enhanced human health and well-being, environmental protection, increased profitability, and energy efficiency. Green building demands the integration of green technologies and interactions among other building components to achieve sustainability goals. It is evident that the application of green technologies can contribute to sustainable development.

For instance, in southern California, the application of efficient water heating, energy-efficient HVAC systems, the introduction of daylight, optimisation of building orientation and configuration, insulation, and application of passive solar have helped designers to achieve a 59% reduction in building energy consumption.

Digital technology adoption promotes the quality and efficiency of information acquisition in the project network. Existing research indicates that a digital construction framework incorporating BIM, three-dimensional (3D) laser scanning, and other technologies help to optimise the efficiency of the renovation project process by 15% and helps to shorten the duration by two months, with cost savings of 7.41%.

It also facilitates data computation and analysis, which assists stakeholders in making rational decisions.
Thoughts on Digitalisation Trends of AEC Industry
[a]https%3A%2F%2Fwww.glodon.com%2Fen%2Flandingpage%2FGsite2.0[/a]

3Glodon

By Jukka Nyman - Managing Director, MagiCAD Group

As we all know, during the past decades' digitalisation has been penetrating all industries as well as to lives of consumers all over the world. The benefits from this trend have been many: for companies, it has been enabling increased not only productivity, but also many forms of new business initiatives like introducing cloud-based service offerings. For consumers, there have also been many improvements to everyday life, including online shopping, access to banks via the internet, etc.

For us working in the AEC industry, digitalisation has enabled new ways of working, especially supported by the ongoing BIM trend. For architects and designers in MEP and construction domains, the use of digital tools has been a norm for many decades. Still, the change in workflows, especially in connecting previously separate silos has been a fundamental one. Again, this change has been driven by the need to improve the overall productivity of the construction value chain, with a promise of shortening project implementation time and also offering better quality. Digitalisation, especially in construction, has been seeing an enormous boost in the past five years, leading to many innovations in the global marketplace.

Why is it still so hard to see proper examples of truly digitised end-to-end workflows in construction, starting from conceptual design and ending to operations management? Are they still separate silos of architecture, designers, construction project management, and operations management making it difficult to reach a common understanding of unified workflows? Or is it because the tools used in any phase of the construction project are so focused on providing support only to a specific work phase? To tackle the latter question, the introduction of Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) has been improving the situation, but not making it perfect. But for the former question, the challenge lies in old ways of working and in the skewed value chain in the construction industry, which does not support unified workflows.
How Can Construction Industry Cope With Challenges, Technology Adoption And Sustainability
[a]https%3A%2F%2Fwww.glodon.com%2Fen%2Flandingpage%2FGsite2.0[/a]

#Glodon

This year, geopolitical tensions have combined with ever more extreme environmental incidents exaggerating the already uncertain outlook for worldwide economic activity and supply chains. The construction industry is shaped by the megatrends of digital transformation, urbanisation, as well as markets and geopolitics. The transition to a sustainable built environment also presents significant opportunities, challenges, and legal risks for players in the sector.

In the recent The Year in Review webinar held by World Built Environment Forum, participants share their perceptions of 2022 and expectation for the year ahead.

Challenges and the Way Ahead

The built environment faces several headwinds in 2022. The persistent influence of COVID-19, geopolitical turbulence, supply chain pressure, cost inflation, skills shortages, and a slowdown in the global economic recovery continue to haunt the industry. Some challenges will remain in the year to come.

Simon Durkin, Head of European Research and Strategy at BlackRock Real Assets, categorises challenges into cyclical and structural. He believes central bank policy and also the uncertainty around the interest rate, environments, and the risks that come with it will be one of the biggest headwinds in 2023. And one of the biggest cyclical challenges is to what extent the occupier market is impacted.

"I think one of the risks for real estate is not just around rising rates and how much further they might have to go and the impacts that have on property lending. And it also has an impact on the occupier. Now we cannot have a recession without that being an impact on the occupier markets."

As for structural challenges, he believes one of the biggest in urban areas is the post-pandemic work-from-home, flexible working balance. The less demand for office space will be a challenge. It will change the market, and the industry will need a new playbook.

Another issue is that environmental and sustainability factors are becoming more imminent. But for him, more importantly, the industry should not overlook the societal role that real estate has to play; the societal factors should gain equal attention as environmental ones.

He believes once the industry goes down on the downturn in the cycle, very quickly, it will find itself in the upturn. And the window of opportunity will probably start to open next year.

Uncertainty generally leads to more disputes that will have huge impacts on time and money for the global economy, construction industry, and project stakeholders. Toby Hunt, Partner, and Head of Europe at HKA cited the 2022 Fifth Annual CRUX Insight Report, saying the change in scope is the top-ranking cause of claims and disputes in most regions. Closely related, the high prevalence of design conflicts can be attributed, and also contract interpretation issues.

To reduce claims and disputes in 2023, he believes market engagement with supply chains for large new projects is essential. "Knowing not only your own internal risks but also to have assessed those risks from the firms that you contract with in a regular basis, I think firms will be in a much better position to deal with the issues as they arise and as well as the consequences which come from that."
