How to Organize Your Closet

In university apartments you don’t always have tons of storage space, so it’s important to maximize the space you do have. With proper organization and folding, you can fit everything you need into your closet. So, when you move into your UVU apartment, try these tips.

To hang or to fold?

Some clothes are delicate and wrinkle easily so they should not be folded, but make sure to use a proper hanger so as to not stretch or dent the fabric. If you hang up sweaters, a lot of times they will get these weird bumps in the shoulders from the corner of the hangers. Try folding sweaters instead, or an alternative method of putting them on a hanger that doesn’t stretch out the shoulders. Your university apartment in Orem may not provide hangers, so make sure you buy some or bring them with you.

How To Fold

Depending on which UVU student housing you live in, and your shelf/dresser situation, there are multiple ways to fold your clothes. If you will be putting shirts or pants on a shelf, folding them flat and stacking them on top of each other will work just fine. If you are keeping them in a drawer, rolling them and standing them up vertically will help you to see all of your clothing items at once without digging through and making a mess. For flat folding, fold the shirt into thirds vertically, and then in thirds again horizontally. For rolling, fold the shirt into thirds and then roll it up like a towel or burrito. For pants, fold in half and then into thirds. For rolling pants, fold them in half and then roll.

Organizing Containers

Organization containers will be your best friend. Every item needs to have a home, if it doesn’t, then you need to create one. Jewelry can go in a box tucked neatly on your shelf. Using an open top box, or a divider for small things like socks will keep them from spilling everywhere. If your UVU apartment provides a dresser, using dividers in the drawers will help you keep everything organized.

Try a Shoe Rack

Get a small shelf to stack your shoes on and underneath to fit more of them. Squishing your shoes on top of each other makes a mess, and can get them dirty. A shoe rack helps you maximize the space in UVU student housing while keeping all of your shoes easy to reach.

Still out of space?

If you still don’t have enough space, it might be time to say goodbye to some of the clothes you’ve had since middle school. Clothing that is stained, has holes, or just looks really worn out should be thrown away. Clothing that is in good condition, but just isn’t your style and you never wear it, can be donated.
