Orthopedic issues are considered most troublesome as they make it difficult for the person to even perform daily activities. In people with delayed diagnosis or treatment, the condition becomes so worse that lifelong complications are on the cards. While on the other hand, severe orthopedic issues require surgical intervention, and in most cases, Orthopedic Trauma Implants are required.

In this post, we are going to discuss one of the orthopedic conditions that affect our hips. Hip dysplasia is a condition characterized by improper alignment of the hip joint. Let us talk about the condition in deep.

What is Hip Dysplasia?

Hip dysplasia is an orthopedic condition in which the ball portion of the upper thighbone is not covered by the socket. When such a situation occurs, the hip joint becomes partially or completely displaced.

In those with non-displaced hip joints, hip dysplasia can easily displace them even while doing routine activities. Besides this, people suffering from this condition also experience faster wear tear in the hip joint. It is also noticed that some people are born with hip dysplasia, and this is one of the reasons why doctors always check babies after birth for this condition.

What Are the Signs and Symptoms of the Condition?

This condition can affect people of all age groups and the symptoms associated may depend upon the age. In some infants with hip dysplasia, one leg may appear longer than the other. As they start to walk, limping may be noticed. Besides this, parents may also find one hip less flexible than the other one.

If teenagers get affected by the condition, painful complications occur, and that may include osteoarthritis or hip labral tear. Sometimes, people suffering from hip dysplasia may also feel instability of the hip.

What Causes Hip Dysplasia?

During birth, the hip joint of the infants is made up of soft cartilages that later turn into a bone. Here, the ball and the socket must fit together. When this does not occur, hip dysplasia is on the cards. Besides this, in some cases, the hip joint moves out of its position due to an overcrowded womb during the final month before birth. The womb space may reduce due to:

  • First pregnancy

  • Large-sized baby

  • Breech presentation

How Hip Dysplasia is Diagnosed?

Hip dysplasia can be diagnosed during regular visits after the birth of the child. The doctor examines the baby’s legs by moving them in different directions to confirm whether the hip joint is intact or not.

The problem arises when someone is suffering from mild hip dysplasia. Such a condition is hard to detect as in such cases, the child may not experience any symptoms until young adult age. If hip dysplasia is suspected, the doctor may perform imaging tests like X-rays or MRI.

How Hip Dysplasia is Treated?

When it comes to the treatment of hip dysplasia, it depends upon the age of the person and the severity of the condition.

In infants, the doctor uses Pavlik Harness to realign the hip joint and keep it in place. This is often used for babies under 6 months as it does not work for older ones. In older people, hip replacement surgery may be performed.
