Build the nation through girls’ education.

Girls education is paramount because it helps her think critically and formulate new ideas while enhancing her own creativity and imagination. Having stated the obvious, education is the foundation of any society and is responsible for the economic, social, and political growth development of society. Therefore, it is evident that schools play an important role in building a nation’s future by promoting the comprehensive development of its future citizens - its children, especially the girl child.

The growth and education of a girl child are synced with the future of our nation, which is reflected through the quality of the current education system. Therefore, a school must incite curiosity in young, impressionable minds and equip them with the means to become better human beings capable of making decisions independently. The education of a girl child must facilitate the advancement of a healthy thought process and refine their cognitive abilities. In the modern competing world, education becomes a basic necessity after food, clothes, and shelter. Hence, school education must focus on several aspects that contribute immensely to the development of young girls as they step into adulthood as their well-being guarantees the well-being of their family, community, society, and nation.

On the flip side, several girls are kept away from educational opportunities because their parents are unaware of the benefits or simply think of education as an added expense. Any interaction, programme, or activity designed to help these girls lead a better and meaningful life definitely serves a larger practical purpose. The education of a girl child should not be restricted to a certain economic section of the society, it must be for every girl child. Girls education is paramount and inevitably affects everyone.

One of the nation’s best child rights NGOs, Save the Children, runs centres in Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai with the education of in India at its core. Along with education, children are also given psychosocial support and counselling. In Mumbai, Save the Children takes learning right into the streets through a ‘Ride to School’ programme, which uses a Mobile Learning Centre with benches, a blackboard, a library, games, and a TV-DVD player that provides them with a classic school environment. This initiative is an attractive proposal to encourage them to leave their life on the streets behind.

Another successful programme by Save the Children was carried out in collaboration with Aviva Life Insurance called Street to School. Under this programme, nine educational activity centres were set up between Delhi and Kolkata for the street and working children. It provided children with a year of education before being sent off to mainstream schools. Additionally, this programme also provided them with food, unconventional education, leisure activities, arts crafts, music and dance, life-skill workshops, health care, and therapy.

The sheer number of girls who are denied education and are in need of help is staggering. Help and support at an individual level will also make a huge difference in the lives of these children. Join hands with Save the Children in its many endeavours to redeem and transform the lives of the disadvantaged.
