The fun of Mahjong is in the constant decision-making process. There is something for everyone in Mahjong, whether you are playing for fun or trying to win a tournament.

Sets of Mahjong come with different amounts of tiles. Although there are 152 core tiles in Mahjong sets, additional tiles may be added to the set such as blanks, seasons, or jokers. TABLE REGULATION allows players to decide whether to use extra tiles.

Dice

To determine the dealer, players use two dice. The dealer is the player who sits in the east seat if they are not using dice.

National Mah Jongg League Card

Each year, the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL), publishes a PLAYING CODE with new Mahjong scores and hands. The rules are summarized on the back of the card.

Choose a dealer

Every player rolls the dice, and the highest roller becomes the dealer. The dealer is also known as "East".

Distribution of Tiles

The dealer will roll the dice. The dealer rolls the dice to determine the remaining stacks of tiles on his wall. The dealer counts down from the right to the number of stacked tiles on the wall.

Slide the pusher to the left beyond the last tile, then break the wall by curling out the remaining wall. Use the right end to tilt the tiles towards the opposing player. Slide the pusher into place.

The dealer will take the two stacks of four tiles from the curtsied wall. Counterclockwise, the dealer places two stacks in front each player until they have six stacks (twelve tile). The dealer will curtail the wall clockwise when the wall is gone.

Each player will have twelve tiles. The dealer will then take the top two tiles from the wall. In a clockwise direction, the dealer gives each player one tile.

Each player will have thirteen tiles, while the dealer will have 14 tiles. The dealer will discard one tile once the game starts. Each player will have thirteen mahjong pieces.

Categories

There are nine categories in the NMJL card. The card publication year is represented by a category. All hands within this section will include the year (ex. "2021"). The zero is represented by the white dragon/soap. You can use the other three tiles as bams, dots, or cracks. However, they must all be of the same suit.
