Windows 11 SE: What You Can And Can't Do In Microsoft's Remote Learning OS

Microsoft introduced Windows 11 SE, its new student-focused operating system in the beginning of November, following the launch of Windows 11 in October. Windows 11 SE was built with teachers and students in mind and is designed to offer a simple, uncluttered environment for children according to Microsoft.

This isn't the first Microsoft operating system designed to be a student-friendly one. Windows 10 S was the student-oriented version of Windows 10, but Microsoft claimed that this version of Windows 10 only blocked certain applications from downloading similar to parental controls. However, Windows 11 SE is an operating system that is distinct from Windows 10 SE with a focus on remote management.

After a number of schools across the United States started remote learning during the pandemic, access to reliable hardware and software was crucial for many children of school age to continue their education. Microsoft created Windows 11 SE with that in mind.

What is Windows 11 SE?Top top blogis a cloud first operating system that is designed for classrooms for children from K-8. It has a simple design and controlled installation of applications. Since the software is geared towards classrooms it is unlikely to discover it in retail stores. Instead, Windows 11 SE comes preloaded on certain Microsoft devices that Microsoft plans on selling to schools and educational institutions.

Is it possible to install Windows 11 SE on a home laptop? Unfortunately, no. Windows SE cannot be installed on your personal computer in the same manner as Windows 10 or Windows 11 would. But conversely, should you need to upgrade, you can buy a different version of Windows and install it on the Windows 11 SE-enabled device, after the device was erased by an IT administrator. The device won't be able to return to Windows 11 SE, though you should be cautious prior to making the move.

What apps work with Windows 11 SE devices? Microsoft Office, Teams and Minecraft for Education are all preloaded on Windows 11 SE devices. Apps such as Google Chrome or Zoom can be downloaded. However, only administrators can download and manage other applications via Microsoft Intune for Education. Microsoft has provided this list of six kinds of apps available for download:

Apps for filtering content

Test-taking "solutions"

Accessibility applications

Effective classroom communication apps

Essential diagnostics management, connectivity, and supportability apps

Browsers

Messenger and Spotify apps weren't able to make it. This means there are fewer distractions on Windows 11 SE devices. However, Microsoft said apps that operate in a web browser will still work.

It is also impossible to alter any of the settings within the operating system. As with the apps, only administrators can modify these settings. Administrators can also remotely wipe the device remotely.

How does Windows 11 compare to Windows 11 SE? Windows 11 SE and Windows 11 SE are different in the sense that Windows 11 was intended for personal use, whereas Windows 11 SE was created to manage remote IT or classroom settings. The different goals affect how users access the operating system, and which applications can run on it. You can upgrade to Windows 11 from Windows 10, and Windows 11 has no app limitations. On Windows 11 SE, only administrators can add apps and even then, from an extremely limited number. The systems function and look identical if you do not.
