World of Warcraft recently announced the Wrath of the Lich King expansion is coming to Classic servers. Wrath Of the Lich King brought players onto the frozen planet of Northrend and saw them face off against the Lich King and his undead Scourge at the summit of the world. The expansion was one of the most adored in WoW history and its release alongside its new Dragonflight expansion brought almost the same amount of excitement.
Game Rant participated in a group interview with World of Warcraft Classic lead software engineer Brian Birmingham and principal system designer Kris Zierhut about Wrath of the Lich King Classic's grand return.
As members of the original Wrath of the Lich King team, Birmingham and Zierhut are committed to the advancement of World of Warcraft as they are well-versed. The two developers discussed the most difficult aspects of reviving Wrath of the Lich King and discussed how they plan to develop World of Warcraft Classic.
One of the biggest challenges in the development of Wrath of the Lich King Classic comes from the programming. Consolidating the information from Classic, Wrath of the Lich King and the retailers World of Warcraft into a singular experience is a complex project. According to Birmingham the task requires importing the codes to Vanilla World of Warcraft, Burning Crusade, and Wrath of the Lich King and connecting it with previous and current Classic in addition to retail World of Warcraft versions.
"We're facing six different versions and are trying to ensure that changes that happen within one are correctly taken into account in the version we release in the future buy WOW WOTLK Classic Gold. That's a task we are grappling with by making notes of the changes as well as contemplating which version would make it the best sense utilize."
