It is almost always the case that both Stainless Steel Square Pipe and tube components are interchangeable. Although they are both hollow, their main purpose is to ferry gases or liquids across various media, several distinct differences separate them.
 
Pipe
 
Pipes have a round cross-section and are hollow in the center. A piping system uses these components to distribute pellets, powders, gases, fluids, or even steam. There are two types of pipe size designations: NPS and DN. The North American pressure system, or NPS, is a standard set of pipe sizes that are suitable for both high and low-pressure applications. The term describes pipes in non-specific terms, which may help identify the diameter of a hollow in non-dimensional terms. The NPS value helps determine the conveyance capacity of a pipe in a rough estimate, though it does not match its true diameter. It is important to consider the dimensions of pipes when defining their characteristics. Among these dimensions is the inner diameter or ID, the outer diameter or OD, and the wall thickness or WT. Pipe schedules are also known as wall thicknesses. A pipe’s dimensions determine its liquid capacity. The OD outer diameter subtracts from the wall thickness or the wall thickness plus 2 times the OD outer diameter (or schedule). Due to the designation of the wall thickness as a schedule, most Square Stainless Steel Pipes are available in Sch values. STD., Sch. XS, Sch. XXS or Sch. 40. With the same schedule, it is possible to manufacture separate pipes with different NPS and yet have a different wall thickness in either inches or millimeters.
 
Tube –
 
Pipes are always rounding, but tubes are available in any shape, including round, rectangular, squared, or oval. It is easier to order these components because they have dimensions such as OD and WT, similar to pipes. Outside diameter, or OD, along with wall thickness, or WT, are used to estimate the hollow section of tube components. The only difference is that tubes measure in inches or millimeters. A tube’s dimensions will often indicate its hollow section’s accurate dimensions.

The difference between the diameter of a pipe and a tube

 
It is possible to order tubes with dimensions such as outside diameter and wall thickness during the ordering process. Occasionally, order dimensions like OD ID or ID Wall Thickness are also available. Gauges measure wall thickness, but tube IDs is theoretical. The smaller the gauge number; the larger the outside diameter. Alternatively, you can order the pipe with NPS, which requires the pipe size as well as the schedule number.

The manufacturing process for pipes and tubes

 
It is possible to manufacture tubes with either a seamless or a welded construction, just as those are the case with pipes. Despite this, tubes are more challenging to produce because of their tighter tolerances. To meet the standards or specifications, the manufacturer must meet all tolerances. Since tube manufacturing involves a finished product, several parameters require consideration, including testing procedures, quality checks, and inspections.

Traditionally, pipes serve for transport across media, but tubes have become more popular for structural applications such as scaffold and staging. While tubes are temporary structures, they can support a crew and materials to assist with the construction, maintenance, and repair of various structures, such as bridges, buildings, and other manmade structures.
