Setting up a Java-based Minecraft server can be tricky for those who aren't savvy with file movement and editing. However, the task is simpler than it may appear at first glance.

Mojang also offers a guide on its official website that will help players navigate the process. Players will be able to create a base server with just one folder and a few other files. They can then tweak it to their liking or start playing in version 1.19.

This method also applies to previous versions of the game, as Mojang provides many versions of the game's server file.

Minecraft players can follow the below steps to set up a free server.

1. Head to the game's official site, where the server Java file is hosted. 1.19 players want to make sure they download the server.1.19.0.jar. This is the current server build. 2. Players can create a folder to store the downloaded.jar file for easy access. You can call it whatever you like, but it should be something like "Minecraft Server". Once the folder is set up, players should place the downloaded.jar file inside. 3. Next, players need to open the command prompt. For example, C:\Users\Admin\Desktop\Minecraft Server or whatever directory the folder resides in. This directory can be checked by players opening the server folder and inspecting the top of their window.

4. Next, players should type Java -jarserver.1.19.0.jar. Press enter. Players will get an error but it is normal as it will generate the necessary EULA file.

5. Players should return to the server folder and open EULA.txt using their preferred text editor like Notepad.

6. After you have made your changes, save the changes and close the text editor.

7. You will also need to have a server.properties.file. This file must be opened with a text-editor. To open the file correctly, some players may need to choose "Open With" and manually select their text editor.

8. Players should make note of the line that reads "query.port," as this line will list the ports that players will need to forward on their router where applicable. This may not be necessary in all cases, depending on the hardware setup. Traditionally, players must forward the default port 25565 to their router's settings. However, the port may change in certain circumstances.

9. The rest of the server properties file will dictate how the server operates. For example, "gamemode" can be set to Survival, Creative or Adventure to set the server's default game mode. Players can also control things such as difficulty and PvP access, maximum players, and whether the Nether will be accessible.

10. After all necessary changes have been made on server.properties, players are able to save the changes. Once the server.properties has been modified, players can save the changes. If everything went well, the.jar file should start running the server and players should be capable of connecting to it.

11. If players didn't set an IP address in their server property file, the server IP will be tied with their machine's IP. If a player has 192.168.0.5 as their PC address, the server will follow suit. Minecraft's multiplayer menu allows players access to the server by entering their IP followed by the forward port. An example address that players can connect to is 192.168.0.5.25565. To connect to their server directly from the multiplayer menu, the player hosting the server can enter localhost.

Once these steps are followed, Minecraft players can connect to the server with their server admin and start playing. If there are any future changes, the admin can close the server.properties file in the text editor and make any necessary adjustments.
