As some developers embrace the controversial use of digital tokens, the folks at Minecraft have put their foot down on NFTs and blockchain technologies.
Their post came in response a feedback from their community members who wanted "clarification and transparency" regarding where Mojang Studios or Minecraft stand on this topic.
"While we are in the process of updating our Minecraft Usage Guidelines to offer more precise guidance on new technologies, we wanted to take the opportunity to share our view that integrations of NFTs with Minecraft are generally not something we will support or allow," the post says. Steam banned cryptocurrency games and cryptocurrency-issued games last year.
Some creators use blockchain technology for selling things like worlds and skins. But the Minecraft folks want their community to be a place where everyone has the same content. They believe NFTs can create models of scarcity that conflict with our Guidelines.
They state that blockchain technology is not allowed to be integrated within our client or server applications. Additionally, Minecraft in-game content, such as worlds and skins, and other mods, cannot be used to create a rare digital asset.
Mojang says that the decision was made partly because NFTs (and blockchain) do not align with Minecraft's values, "creating a scenario where the haves and have-nots."
Mojang Studios genuinely care about their community and recognize that NFTs may not always be reliable, which could lead to players losing their money.
Their stance comes at the same time that some developers have signed anti NFT Pledges while others have been exposed for their money-grabbing scheme. Some, such as Team17, have even made NFT projects public, only to be ended by outrage from their communities.
