Minecraft: All of Denmark virtually recreated

Previous slide Next slide

The entire country of Denmark has been recreated to scale, in the virtual world of Minecraft.

The entire country has been faithfully replicated in the immensely popular style of the building-block style of the title by the Danish government.

Danish residents are encouraged to "freely move around in Denmark" and "find your own residential area, to build and take down".

In the world, more than 50 million Minecraft copies have been sold.

The game is described as an "sandbox game" and lets players exist in a virtual environment by using building blocks to construct everything from simple structures up to entire worlds.

Minecraft was launched in 2011 by independent Swedish developer Markus "Notch" Persson.

According to the Danish government the maps were created to be used as a tool for education.Email They suggest "virtual field excursions" into difficult-to-reach areas of the country.

Flat roofs

There aren't any specific goals to be achieved other than continued survival.

Many players are interested in recreating real-world locations.

Last year an intern working with the UK's Ordnance Survey team built geographically precise landscapes covering 86,000 square miles (224,000 sq km) of Britain.

However, the Danish project is more ambitious and features more detailed reproductions of towns and buildings.

The only difference, as the team behind it stated was that all roofs were flat.

It also bans the use of dynamite, one of the most popular tools used in the game.

The full map download for Denmark will be available until October 23rd.
