Don't expect to buy the creeper skin as an NFT (non-fungible token) and plug it into your Minecraft server in the near future. Mojang has taken a strong stance against the massively popular game's involvement with NFTs and blockchain technology. "[To ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and a fair experience, blockchain technology is not allowed to be integrated within our Minecraft client or server applications, nor can they be utilized to create NFTs for any game-related content, such as skins, worlds and other items, or other mods," Mojang said in an announcement. It will soon update the game's guidelines in line with.

Minecraft provides a marketplace on which users can sell their work to others. Mojang mentions that a few companies have recently begun offering NFTs that can be used in connection with the game. There are some NFTs that are associated with Minecraft skin packs and world files that people can purchase. The studio has said that it could be possible for players to earn Minecraft NFTs for activities that they completed within the game or in other places. Mojang isn't in agreement with any of that.

It said that each of these applications of NFTs or other blockchain technologies creates a digital owner based on scarcity, exclusion, which is not in accordance with Minecraft values of inclusion and creativity. "NFTs are not inclusive of all our community and create a situation of the haves and have-nots."

Mojang rules allow Minecraft server owners to charge access fees, however everyone should be able to access the same functionality. The studio said that NFTs could create scarcity and exclusion models that are incompatible with our guidelines and the spirit of Minecraft.

Mojang also expressed concern over the speculation-based nature of NFTs and pointed out that certain were sold at "artificially, fraudulently inflated prices." In light of the fact that Minecraft has millions of young players It's not a great look for the game to be a supporter of NFTs. Mojang has stated that NFTs are speculative pricing and investment mindset detracts from the game and promotes profiteering. This is contrary to the long-term happiness of our players.

The studio and its parent company Microsoft have a reasons to be cautious about blockchain technology and NFTs. There has been a significant backlash from the wider gaming community against these technologies. Another reason is that cryptocurrency prices have dropped, and the NFT market is becoming less viable. Axie Infinity was once a leader in blockchain gaming. This led to players lost out and daily player numbers plummeted by more than two-thirds over the past few months.

Other major players in the gaming industry have already shied away from NFTs and blockchain. Steam recently stopped NFT trading and cryptocurrency-powered games in October. Sony recently announced a PlayStation Rewards program that includes digital collectibles. It stressed that these cannot be traded and that the program does not include NFTs or blockchain.

However, Mojang isn't completely rejecting the blockchain. The studio has said that it will keep track of the evolution of the technology to "determine whether it can allow for more secure experiences or other practical and inclusive applications in gaming."
