Minecraft player works for two years building a virtual city by Zoe Kleinman Technology reporter, BBC News

A student from Delaware has spent two years building an imaginary world that he named Titan City in the video game Minecraft.

Titan City is built out of 4.5 million Minecraft building blocks and contains 96 buildings.

Duncan Parcells says it has taken the two years he spent to construct his project, working an average of five hours per week working on the project.

His first structure was a replica of the World Trade Center. It took 18 months to build.

The 19-year-old believes Titan City is not a real New York model.

He said to the BBC, "It's inspired New York."

"A majority of people believe that it's a sport for recreation, but it's not."

He constructed the city using the Xbox 360 version of Minecraft but has now transferred the city to the PC version which, he says, offers more construction opportunities.

Mr. Parcells plans to build an airport and an athletic stadium.

He said, "I suppose it's an outlet for architecture and energy."

"I've always liked architecture. I am particularly happy with Victorian-style buildings that are less modern and more art deco.

"A majority of people stop by and want to walk around and explore or help with the building. Many of them assist in helping construct roads.

While Titan City has received a warm welcome online and offline, Mr Parcells stated that up to now he has kept his virtual world separate from his everyday life.

He added, "I've kept this under the radar for a while. It's kinda like a parallel existence that I'm not talking about however, people are starting to discover."

"My parents think it's cool - I think they're just glad I don't play it so often."

Microsoft recently agreed to purchase Minecraft studio Mojang in a deal worth $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).

Markus Persson, aka Notch announced that the game had hit 100 million users in February 2014.

After the initial purchase, Minecraft is free to download and play. However there are in-game purchases available.

The game is played in a virtual environment composed of cubes made from different materials. The majority of these materials can be used to build blocks, and some can be transformed into usable raw materials such as wood, iron and diamond.

The game requires you to survive by building shelters using blocks and turn raw materials and combinations thereof into objects (swords and bows, armour and so on.) to defeat the many monsters in the game.
