Lego Takes on Minecraft With Video Game

Lego is taking on Minecraft by introducing a video game

2 June 2015

Lego, a Danish toy maker, has launched a rival video game that is similar to Minecraft.

Lego Worlds is now available for purchase at PS11.99 through the Steam gaming platform. The game will be released in 2016 featuring both modern and classic playsets, as well as a variety of well-known mini-figures.

Features are added in response to feedback from players of the game.

Lego already sells Minecraft playsets, allowing gamers to physically create their own virtual creations. Lego Worlds invites fans to do the reverse.

Tom Stone, managing director of TT Games, which will launch Lego Worlds in the coming months, said it "embodies the physical, Lego brick-building fun that consumers have enjoyed for decades but on a platform that offers a completely new type of experience with the beloved bricks".

He added, "From the brick-bybrick editor to discovering an extensive variety of characters and creatures to fill you worlds - there are endless creative possibilities."

Your favorite toy

Daniel Goldberg, who wrote a book on the growth of Minecraft, said that he was "surprised" that it took so long.

"Minecraft is exactly what Lego should have been doing 10 years ago," he said.

"I'm certain it will be a massive success for them."

Markus Persson, the Swedish game developer who created Minecraft has not hidden his love for Lego. It appears that the admiration is reciprocal.

In the past, David Gram, Lego's marketing director, saidthat "Minecraft is digital Lego. We only wish we had come up with it."

Mr Goldberg believes that Mr. Persson who is also known as Notch will be "flattered by the game."

He stated that Lego was his favorite toy as a child and that it was the primary inspiration for Minecraft. It was satisfying to see things come full circle."

"I don't think there will be animosity. Games developers in general tend to be flattered when someone copies an existing game."

Lego is marketed at children but also for an adult-only group of enthusiasts.

Minecraft, which was bought by Microsoft last year it has also managed to appeal to both children and adults.

Mr Goldberg declared that "the gamers playing Minecraft has been quite large, so I'm certain there will be a demand for both games."
