After more than 20 months and countless hours of design, Tag Heuer introduced the concept of the Monaco V4 watch. That was back in 2004. The revolutionary concept timepiece changed the what we know about the basic features of a wristwatch. What was undoubtedly unique about the concept was the movement and automatic winding mechanism. The Monaco V4 concept watch was the first watch ever to implement "belt driven" movement. The traditional wheel transmission system was brilliantly replaced by a belt driven movement consisting of 13 belts.
Tag Heuer envisioned this exquisite timepiece by gaining inspiration from a car engine. Instead of having an oscillating rotor weight, it has a weight that moves up and down in a linear motion, similar to a piston in a vehicle. Using a notched belt system is far more beneficial than using traditional gears, since a belt will transfer power rather than use a chain of gears. Another key feature is instead of using synthetic traditional jewels, the Monaco V4 also has 2.2mm diameter bearings with 0.25mm balls that rotate within the watch. This promotes friction reduction and decreased maintenance for the owner.
