Types of Myopia Control

When you need to look at the different options for myopia control, there are four widely accepted options that you can choose. The one that you may work with depends on a number of different factors including:

Lenses

In several studies, it has shown that eyeglass and contact lenses are effective to help control how much myopia is able to progress. There need to be special lenses given by your eye doctor for this to work and a myopia control specialist will help determine which of them will fit your child. Some do better for those who are active, those who spend time reading often, so your eye doctor is the best one to help make the decision.

Orthokeratology

This is a treatment where medical devices are added to the eyes while you are sleeping. It will exert a gentle amount of pressure on the cornea and the surface of the eye to help temporarily mold the outer layers and fix the problem. The effects are able to last all day and provide better vision for the user without glasses. The device is similar to the contact so it will not cause a lot of issues along the way.

Distance Center Multifocal Lenses

These are going to be worn in the same way as the regular soft contact lenses, though they work slightly different in order to provide more control of the myopia problem. There is an optical trick in the middle of the lens that helps slow down how quickly myopia is going to progress. There are two brands of this lens to work with and your doctor will be able to help. you figure out the brand that is right for you.

Medication

Atropine, which can be given in ointment or eye drop form, can help slow down myopia. You will just apply it once a day and then continue the treatment for as long as the eye doctor thinks it is necessary. This is not as much of a cure as some of the other options, but it can control myopia for many patients along the way. It is often used along with bifocal glasses for the best results.

When it comes to myopia control, it is important to work with your eye doctor to ensure you find the right treatment for your needs. Each of these methods can be an effective way to treat the myopia, but not all are going to be efficient for you. Discuss the different options with the eye doctor to make sure you get the control you need on myopia.
