How to Work From Home: 5 Tips From People

The best thing about working at home is the freedom it offers, up until your cat tries to eat your laptop. Then your neighbor, whom could be creating a time machine starts firing up all sorts of power tools as well as noisy machines across the street.

Remote work has become an essential for many professionals due to COVID-19. What environment could we be more productive in: the office, or the home office.

Your coworkers can often be the most significant challenge to your productivity at the workplace. You may be invited to lunch by coworkers who drop by your desk. While the social benefits may be a great benefit, they can also become problematic if you're easily distracted.

However, family members can sometimes be distracting at home. It's easy to turn into your worst adversary. Because without coworkers around, you're free to drop those pesky inhibitions. There is no one watching in the home office. This doesn't mean you feel the same peer pressure or obligation as others to do things. (Also there's no need to wear pants.)

1. Set expectations with everyone who is staying with you.
You could work from home, however, you'll still need "company." Ensure that your work space is cherished by your the family members, roommates, or dogs. It's not necessary to work from your home in order to be productive.

If you live in a shared space with another work-from-home adult, you may have to establish rules for meetings as well as shared tables and chairs, as well as silence times.

2. Take clear breaks.
You can get so distracted when you telecommute that it's easy to not take breaks. It's not necessary to feel guilty about working in the same place where you rest. Instead, you should take five minutes to relax.

Don't just open YouTube and watch comfort clips. Take breaks at your workstation. Take a stroll, enjoy fresh air, or spend time with others who may be at home too.

Ginny's advice is a good one. "Breaks like cooking lunch and drinking water can help your energy to become more productive." To become more efficient, you don't have to work 100% of the day.

3. Engage with other people.
You'll probably be missing the social interactions with your colleagues that you have every day when your office moves to remote working. It's not possible to have small talk and engage in other activities while working at your home.

So what can you do? Communicate.

Regular communication with your colleagues can help overcome loneliness and boredom. Utilize Zoom and Slack to communicate with your employees through video chat.

Remember that you work from home, not at the moon. Interacting with other people throughout the day is acceptable even if they're not your colleagues. It's a good idea to see another face throughout the day, especially when the majority of your workday is solitary. You can make the most of your time off by engaging with other people.

Lindsay Kolowich (digital marketing strategist) states, "Cooking at the home is time that you would not spend on cooking a meal if you'd been working that day, but I find the extra minutes can add-up in the end. I always make sure to cook my meals in the evening before so that I don't have to worry about this.
